change of venue for Dunbar this Sunday

Hi All

In case anyone is interested in running at Dunbar this Sunday, the final Borders series race, please see this link for details of change of venue. http://www.bordersxc.com/p/dates.html

Think the race starts at noon, registration from 11am.  Organisers are asking that everyone comes prepared with a completed entry form and the correct fee (£5).

I’m yet to decide whether to go,  is anyone else planning on going?

41st Carnethy 5 Hill Race

What a beautiful day and no snow!!!

Great turn out for the Harriers & friends at the race.  In order of me remembering who was there :- Robert Walker, Tim, Janice, Rob Wilson, Andy, Mike, Julian, Kevin, Kate, Ali, Andrea, Gilly, Al (Jane’s husband),Chris, Sandy & Lynne Bennet & Duncan.

The men got 14th team and the ladies got 10th team. Mike B got 1st Policeman and Al got 1st local.

Good effort put in by all, although my effort was good my ability was not so good but I did choose to run with an injury – despite this I really enjoyed the race.

During the race I was treated to the unmistakeable tones of Chris Downie chatting away to those around him, whether he was behind me or ahead of me I could hear him and it made me smile as I am known for being a bit chatty but I think Chris is the professional here!

The Adventure Show were filming the race again and I think I was the only Harrier ‘interviewed’ on the top of West Kip, must have been going too slow, but I will apologise now if it appears on tv, at least I didn’t fall over this time though….

The support the runners received, especially from our President was great, lots of wives husbands and children were either on the course or at the finish – we are a lucky bunch!!!

Hopefully others will write a race report too and maybe even look up the results and work out how many of us were there too…. Any photos upload onto your reports yourselves or email to me for the gallery.

That’s my 6th Carnethy 5 over hopefully fitter and stronger next year!

Training for a 100

Just a quick note (obviously I have some time on my hands at the moment). I’m going to use this site to note this years training for the 100 (basically because nobody in Scotland runs this).

This years LDWA 100 is on the 2nd may bank holiday 29th May and as such my “training” usually begins with a marathon distance run with friends in Scarborough 25 miles run over an old race route on the 2nd weekend of the year.

1st change to training, decided not to do this event. Will this come back to haunt me?

2nd training event Falkirk Flyer this will be the 5th year I’ve run from my house (Juniper Green) to Falkirk wheel. This year took place on 3rd weekend in January and instead of 8.5 hours (this is leisurely training) it took under 8. Notable this year in that it was not just John (over from Spain ) and myself but also Charly my dog. Breakfast and lunch were taken along the way. Nice to get to Falkirk before dark

Having now a lack of any long distance event until 9th April (Allendale Challenge) I decided to organise my own training (usually a mistake). So on 2nd Feb I persuaded Robert Walker to accompany me on a Pentland Skyline, coming along for the ride were Iain and Fiona from Harmeny. What a day what a disaster, by the time we reached Turnhouse Iain and Fiona had accepted it was a crazy idea as the wind and rain were so heavy and pealed off to run low level. We continued even though you could not run or walk over the tops (crawling worked quite well though). 5 hours later having lost all energy by the time we got to the Kips we finished. Not only were we walking by the end, we had to send for emergency food and it took me an hour in the bath to warm up. Great day out

Charly obviously had  no problems, no pictures of the finish too painful and too dark

Border XC, Norham 6 February 2011

The best bits of my trip to Norham on Sunday were the drives down the A68/697 and back up the A1.   Each journey took about 90 minutes and, while there was some water on the roads, there was little or no mud.   The Norham course was very different, we plunged into a fast running burn 8 times, i.e. lots of water,  and for the rest of the 4 or 5 miles we struggled through deep and glutinous mud.   What was worse was that about 6 of us were misdirected with about half a mile to go, so despite all the effort, we finished in the last 6.   Mike Pearson was our star in 103rd place, I came 107th and last.

XC Grand Prix

Due to the cancellation of Gala and Peebles Borders races, we are two races short for our XC Grand Prix 2010/11.  The committee will try and tag another two races onto the calendar before October, when the winner will be decided.  Any suggestions then please get in touch…

Keep an eye on the calendar!

My first entry into the forum, wow it’s brilliant!

I have entered all the various Grand Prix events into the calendar, so keep an eye out for up and coming races!  I hope to add more information to each entry (when I have more time) to include how to enter, distance etc.

Borders XC Round 2 Berwick

A last minute decision to forego the Carnethy 5 Hills Race training and I was on my way to the town at the mouth of the Tweed. It was well worth the trek as the day was mild and mostly dry and a welcome respite from howling gales and snow and ice at the top of Carnethy.

The course was a perfect mixture of beach and field/track and less wet and muddy than I had anticipated. Actually it was almost a pleasure running along the sand into the wind – the last time I ran this race it was the day after the Carnethy 5 Hills race which was incredibly painful.

You could tell that the enthusiasm for XC had taken a battering from the relentless snow of December – in fact there seemed to be more kids than adults! I managed 16th out of 106 finishers in 30:06 and Jane Hart of HBT was 88th in a time of 40:40. Mike Pearson of Moorfoots won his age category in 50:37.

Now that I have paid my £10 I may have to attempt to get to Norham and Dunbar. It is a shame that our more ‘local’ races Peebles and Gala could not have been rescheduled later in the season.

Duncan Ball.

Greenmantle Dash 2011

To help alleviate sadness over George’s death, the Greenmantle Dash was the perfect way to commemorate him. He will be sorely missed.

5 Harriers ran, while Dave Cairns helped with the organisation and “El Presidente” Stuart fiddled with his camera in a vain attempt at taking a picture of his foot before his battery went flat.  :D

I am not sure how others feel, but my thighs really ache today after such a short little sprint.
